Hironari Itoi's Award-Winning Design Blurs the Lines Between Inside and Outside

Uchi Soto no Uchi, which translates to "inside of outside," is a one-of-a-kind residential house that was designed for a married couple in their 40s. The design was inspired by the local color, surrounding environment, and the unique shape of the site. Itoi's aim was to create a design that would not only fit into the landscape but also enhance the connection with the land. His ultimate hope was that the completed building would bring happiness to the people living in it.

The house's unique properties lie in its innovative design concept. Three boxes were randomly stacked, and the resulting margins were included in the indoor area. This design approach creates a sense of being outside while actually being inside, akin to living in the spaciousness of a park. Some of the outdoor space is also used to make up part of the living room, further blurring the lines between "inside" and "outside."

One of the key challenges in realizing this design was the unusual shape of the site. Part of a large-scale development site in Chiba prefecture, the plot runs alongside a curve, giving it a unique shape that clearly differs from the rest. While such an unusually shaped area is often perceived as presenting great challenges, Itoi viewed it as an opportunity to create intentional uniqueness.

The design also prioritizes sustainable living. As the residences will be lived in while left constantly open, the plan is to avoid using air conditioners as much as possible. This "open while closing" concept is an innovative solution to the problem of living in densely populated regions like Kanto, which often experience extreme weather conditions.
